Important Facts You Should Know BEFORE You are Involved in an Auto Accident
Florida law only requires that drivers carry personal injury protection and property damage insurance. There is no law that requires a driver to carry insurance to compensate others that they injure in an accident.
The most important thing you can do to protect yourself is to review your insurance policy and make sure it includes the following:
1. Personal Injury Protection (PIP) Coverage without a deductible:
Under Florida law, if you have a $1,000.00 deductible on your Personal Injury Protection Insurance, you can’t claim this as damage with your medical bills from the person who hit you. The cost of a no or zero deductible policy is very inexpensive, when you consider it against the cost of having a deductible if you are in an accident. Personal Injury Protection will normally pay 80% of your medical bills and 60% of your lost wages.
2. Medical Payments Coverage of at least $2000.00:
This will cover the remaining 20% of your medical bills not covered by Personal Injury Protection (PIP).
3. Uninsured Motorist Protection:
There are many uninsured or underinsured drivers in Florida. This protects you in the event that you are hit by someone that does not carry insurance to cover your damages.
